How to read the Bitcoin chart
Each candle covers one period of the timeframe you pick. On a 1-hour chart, one candle is one hour of trading. The body shows where Bitcoin opened and closed, and the wicks show the highest and lowest prices in between. Green means the price rose over that period; red means it fell.
Because Bitcoin trades around the clock, there are no gaps for nights or weekends. That makes it well suited to technical analysis on short timeframes as well as long ones.
Indicators popular with Bitcoin traders
- Moving averages smooth out the noise and show the trend. Price above its moving averages is generally read as an uptrend.
- RSI measures momentum from 0 to 100. Readings above 70 are often called overbought and below 30 oversold.
- MACD tracks the gap between two moving averages. Crossovers of its signal line are a common momentum signal.
- Bollinger Bands widen when Bitcoin gets volatile and squeeze together before big moves.
- Volume shows how much BTC changed hands. Breakouts on high volume tend to be more reliable.
BTCUSDT, BTC-USD, XBTUSD: what's the difference?
They're all Bitcoin, quoted slightly differently. BTCUSDT (Binance) and BTC-USDT (OKX) are priced in Tether, a dollar-pegged stablecoin. BTC-USD (Coinbase) is priced in US dollars. Kraken uses the older ticker XBT for Bitcoin, so its pair is XBTUSD. Prices are almost identical, give or take a few dollars.

On Binance, Coinbase and OKX, scroll left and older data keeps loading, back to when the exchange listed Bitcoin. Kraken shows the latest 720 candles for each timeframe.
Can I save my trend lines?
