What’s on the calendar

Rate decisions

Central banks set the interest rate that everything else is priced from. A surprise, or a change in tone at the press conference, moves currencies, bonds, stocks and crypto within seconds.

Inflation (CPI, PCE, PPI)

Inflation decides what central banks do next. CPI is the headline number markets react to most; PCE is the measure the Fed targets; PPI shows price pressure earlier in the chain.

Jobs report

US nonfarm payrolls, out on the first Friday of most months, show how many jobs the economy added and the unemployment rate. It’s often the most volatile half hour of the month.

Growth (GDP, retail sales)

GDP measures the whole economy each quarter, first as an early estimate and then revised twice. Retail sales show how much consumers are spending each month.

Trading around the news

Prices can jump, spreads widen and stop orders can fill well past their level in the first minutes after a big release. Many traders tighten risk, close positions or simply wait until the dust settles. If you trade through it, plan for the move being larger than usual in either direction.

FreeCharting marks these events on intraday charts and counts down to the next one in the status bar, so they don’t catch you by surprise. You can practise trading them risk-free with paper trading.

Frequently asked questions

Which time zone are the times in?

Your own: the page converts every event to your device’s time zone. Without JavaScript, times are shown in UTC.

Where do the dates come from?

From each organisation’s published schedule: the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the Bank of Canada and the Reserve Bank of Australia for rate decisions, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis and Census Bureau for data releases.

Does it show forecasts and actual numbers?

No. It shows when each event happens, not the figures. The release itself, on the agency’s website, has the numbers the moment they’re out.

Why does the Bank of Japan have no exact time?

The Bank of Japan announces its decision when its meeting ends, usually around midday in Tokyo, so the time varies. The calendar shows it at noon Tokyo time.

Can I see these events on my charts?

Yes. Intraday charts mark upcoming and recent events with a dashed line, and the status bar counts down to the next one that affects the symbol you’re viewing. You can turn the markers off in Chart settings.
